چکیده

The development of piezospectroscopic (PS) composites has enabled the creation of a non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technique which integrates piezospectroscopy, digital image correlation (DIC) and analytical multi-scale mechanics to map the elastic modulus of a coated material. The measured elastic modulus was represented as a normal distribution with a mean value (32.2 GPa) which is within 8% of the conventionally recorded modulus (35 GPa). Damage mechanics are applied to map elastic degradation in situ mechanical loading with an average uncertainty ( 10 GPa) that was sufficient in observing subsurface, progressive damage patterns which are unique to the coated material. & 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Multiscale mechanics to determine nanocomposite elastic properties with piezospectroscopy

The piezospectroscopic (PS) properties of chromium-doped alumina allow for embedded inclusion mechanics to be revisited with unique experimental setups that probe the particles’ state of stress when the composite is under applied load. These experimental investigations of particle mechanics will be compared to the Eshelby theory and a derivative theory. This work discovers that simple nanoparti...

Investigating the Wear Behavior of Fe-Based Amorphous Coatings under Nanoscratch Tests

The wear behavior of two coatings (Fe49.7Cr18Mn1.9Mo7.4W1.6B15.2C3.8Si2.4 and Fe40Cr23Mo14C15B6Y2) sprayed by high-velocity air fuel technology was investigated through nanoscratch tests under ramping loads. Compared with the substrate, the Fe-based amorphous coatings exhibit lower penetration depth, higher elastic recovery, and lower wear volume, indicating the excellent wear resistance of the...

Microstructure and mechanical properties of chromium oxide coatings

Chromium oxide coatings were deposited on low-carbon steel by radiofrequency reactive magnetron sputtering at different oxygen flux values. X-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate the microstructure of chromium oxide coatings. Varying oxygen flux changed the coating microstructure; as with increasing oxyg...

Contact-induced Damage in Ceramic Coatings on Compliant Substrates: Fracture Mechanics and Design

Simple explicit relations are presented for the onset of competing fracture modes in ceramic coatings on compliant substrates from Hertzian-like contacts. Special attention is given to a deleterious mode of radial cracking that initiates at the lower coating surface beneath the contact, in addition to traditional cone cracking and quasiplasticity in the nearcontact area. The critical load relat...

Effect of TiO2 addition on the microstructure and nanomechanical properties of Al2O3 Suspension Plasma Sprayed coatings

Alumina-titania coatings are widely used in industry for wear, abrasion or corrosion protection components. Such layers are commonly deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) using powder as feedstock. In this study, both Al2O3 and Al2O3-13 wt% TiO2 coatings were deposited on austenitic stainless steel coupons by suspension plasma spraying (SPS). Two commercial suspensions of nanosized Al2...
